The Fujitsu ScanSnap iX500 scanner is best described as a topnotch device that has been made even better. In a niche where smartphones and tablets are selling like there is no tomorrow, desktop scanners obviously need more than just the good looks and tweaked features for them to attract the attention of consumers.

Officially unveiled during the 2013 International Consumers Electronics Show early this year, the iX500 is the latest iteration in the highly successful ScanSnap series by this Tokyo-based IT manufacturer and service company.

The ScanSnap iX500 holds the enviable bragging rights as the product of choice when it comes to high-end sheet-fed scanners. Nonetheless, we hasten to add a caveat. This latest offering from Fujitsu doesn’t come cheap and you may have to reconsider your option of going for an upgrade if you already own a Fujitsu S1500 scanner.

Similarities between Fujistsu ScanSnap iX500 and S1500

It is already a given that the S1500 scanner is in various aspects a tough act to follow and for this very same reason, we are seeing a lot of similarities between the 2 Fujitsu scanners. For starters, both ScanSnap models have the same footprint – 292mm x 159mm, and for a device with this size, the Fujitsu scanner is surprisingly light. Additionally, the latest ScanSnap iteration retains the capacity by its predecessor to automatically remove blank pages and align the document.

================================================================================

All in all, the older Fujitsu desktop scanner leaves little room for improvement and it is not surprising that the iX500 does not offer changes and tweaks that may be qualified as dramatic.

New Features

The biggest story about the iX500 is the inclusion of mobile scanning in its suite of features. This added feature of the latest iteration of the ScanSnap scanner allows users to get scanned copies of documents to their iOS and Android devices without the need for the Windows PC or Mac. The iX500 scanner has also gotten some new stuff under the hood as it now boasts of a more powerful processor and a 25-percent speed bump through its new interface for USB 3.0.

Probably the next most talked about feature is a feature that should have been implemented on previous models, but wasn’t and that is Fujitsu has finally melded a ScanSnap with the capability to work with a PC or a Mac. This, of course, will render the S1500 and the S1500M models a bit obsolete (but not for awhile). Fujitsu will support, but not sell these models, for the foreseeable future.

Next to the added features and tweaks, another reason to consider buying the new ScanSnap scanner, particularly the users of Windows PC, is its software suite. The purchase comes bundled with a full copy of Adobe Acrobat Standard version X, which is worth about $299. On top of this valued add-on, the software suite also includes CardMinder and ABBY FineReader Express. Users of the Fujitsu sheet-fed scanner also get access to various cloud services such as SugarSync, SalesForce, Google Drive, Evernote and DropBox.

Final Verdict – It is a Wise Buy

Having the Acrobat X Standard, which is worth $299, bundled with the purchase makes the Fujitsu ScanSnap iX500 a logical pick for Windows PC users who are in the hunt for a scanner that offers the best value. It is significantly better than the Epson GT-S55, which has a $500 price tag, and the Brother ADS-2000, which is priced at $330. On the other hand, if you already own an S1500, then you can still go for the upgrade if there is a compelling reason for you to use the mobile scanning feature of the Fujitsu ScanSnap iX500.

ScanSnap iX500 is equipped with an ultrasonic sensor that can be turned on to help operators avoid losing images. What’s more, an interactive interface allows users to easily bypass intentional double-feed such as a taped-receipt on an expense report.

The new product from Y-Combinator’s HelloFax aims to replace printing and scanning documents while taking a consumer approach to the fabled office of the future.

HelloFax is known for letting people send and receive faxes, request signatures, and fill out forms — all without a physical document. From that service, the company is launching HelloSign, which lets people sign documents digitally.

Through HelloSign, Walla hopes to accomplish what many companies have tried and failed to do: create a paperless office. It was a dream born in the dot-com era but never realized, as workers still cling to physical paper despite the financial and environmental benefits of not doing so.

“The paperless office is this massive failure,” Walla said. “It’s something that has been promised to us for more than 10 years and it just has not come around.”

He described the current era as an “in-between period,” where people are increasingly mobile — with their personal life and at work — but they still need a scanner or printer. When a signature is needed for a legally binding document, people have to print out the doc, sign it, and then scan and send it or fax it.

“It wastes a tremendous amount of time,” Walla said. He thinks HelloSign is the next step in reducing the need for paper documents.

HelloSign is remarkably slick for an e-signature program. It’s a Web-based program that lets users drag and drop documents for uploading. Users can upload or create a signature that’s inserted into the doc. Even the text-functions (used for filling out forms) are easier to use than those in other programs I’ve experienced. After the document is signed, users just plug in an e-mail address, add a custom e-mail message if they want, and hit Send….More at The elusive paperless office: HelloSign says it has the answer – CNET

I think it’s fair to say that most of us have too much paper in our lives, whether it’s business documents, receipts, financial statements, or (my personal weakness) keepsake scraps like menus and ticket stubs. Flatbed scanners are inexpensive, but for large jobs (and, heck, even small ones), the scanning process is tedious.

I’d never considered purchasing a dedicated document scanner, though, until I first heard about the $199 Doxie Go from Apparent. This slick, battery-powered portable document scanner is capable of computer-free scanning, and Apparent’s convincing web site filled my head with dreams of reducing paper clutter via a process that would, hopefully, fall somewhere between painless and fun.

The Doxie Go (“Doxie,” incidentally, means “floozy”—I’ll let you make your own joke) is rectangular glossy white and matte black plastic box that’s about 10 inches long, roughly 2 inches square on the side, and weighs just under a pound. Apparent also includes a calibration card, cleaning tool, mini-USB cable, and drawstring carrying bag; a worldwide power adapter is $10, and a carrying case is $29…read the entire article at Macworld.com

Accusoft releases Accusoft USB Scanner, a first-to-market application that allows Android users to connect a scanner to their tablet device via USB. The application will scan single or multi-page documents directly to Gmail, Evernote and more.

Tampa, FL (PRWEB) June 20, 2012

Accusoft, the leading provider of document, content and imaging solutions, releases Accusoft USB Scanner, a first-to-market application that allows Android users to connect a scanner to their tablet device via USB.

The Accusoft USB Scanner application allows Android mobile device users to scan directly to their device via USB. This application will scan single or multi-page documents to PDF, JPEG, TIFF or BMP formats, and allow users to share to typical sharing apps such as Gmail. In addition, the documents can be scanned directly from within Gmail, Google Drive, Evernote, Box, Skype and more, allowing the users to skip the step of launching a separate app to scan.

“Users can save their scanned document or image and share them via Gmail, Box or any other install application that supports the standard Android sharing,” said Tom Setzer, Director of Recognition for Accusoft. “In addition, if while using the Evernote app on an Android device users wish to add a scanned document to their note, they can press the Attach button and choose the Accusoft USB Scanner app. Once the document is scanned, it will automatically attach that image to the note and return the user to Evernote.”…

Going along with the current technology trend of making everything smaller, Canon has released its miniature version of the traditional scanner to the general public. This iteration of the portable scanner is called the Canon P-150, and it packs quite a punch for such a little guy.

Canon P-150 Portable Document Scanner

First Impressions

For a scanner that is marketed as “portable,” the P-150 is significantly beefier than its slimmer cousins. Most portable scanners are a bit smaller than a standard box of spaghetti. The Canon P-150 portable document scanner is nearly twice this ideal size. Still, the scanner is quite suited for on-the-go usage because it is not large by any stretch of the imagination. The P-150 is a handsomely crafted piece of engineering with its shiny, black exterior and sleek overall appearance.

Installation

The setup of the P-150 is slightly more difficult than that of many other portable scanners because it requires one uncommon step. The separator pad is a part that needs to be manually installed by the user. All that is needed is the correct spatial positioning of the piece followed by a firm push to snap it into place. Once the pad is snapped into place, the rest of the install is cake. Just hook up a cable or two and then it’s all set.

The tricky part is that the scanner can run on either one supplied cable or both of them. Some people will wonder why two cables are needed when one works perfectly fine. Well, the greatest advantage of using both cables simultaneously is that the scanner can charge faster this way. The optional cable connects the scanner to a USB port on the computer in use. Otherwise, power can be obtained from the data cable by itself.

Another confusing aspect to the operation of the P-150 is the option to either install software or not. If one chooses not to install the software, plugging in the scanner to the computer’s USB port will bring up a utility in the form of a drive on the computer. This option allows instant scanning without further delay. The alternative is to go through the familiar installation process that is initiated by an automated program. This install option offers the choice of adding several extra bonuses. The full install is strongly recommended since the utility is very limited.

Performance

The Canon P-150 portable document scanner is an efficient, little machine. Its automatic feeder is a feature that many other micro-scanners do not have. This paper feeder holds up to 20 pages at a time so manual feeding is not a must. This option is probably the biggest advantage of the P-150 since automatic feeding makes this scanner much faster than its competitors. For black and white copies, the scanner can spit out 15 pages a minute. Color copies are processed at a slightly slower 10 pages a minute.

Duplex Scanning

While double-sided scanning is not possible with many portable scanners, the P-150 has no problem with duplex scanning. This is yet another benefit of the Canon over other varieties. Scanning is quick and easy with the double-sided scanning and automatic feeding combination.

The Bottom Line

For right around $250, it is tough to beat the Canon P-150 portable document scanner. While it isn’t the smallest one in its class, the P-150 makes up for its slightly cumbersome size with some great features that are absent on many other portable scanners. A duplex scanning ability and automatic feeding bay gives the Canon P-150 an advantage equivalent to a turbocharged engine on a sports sedan. If speed is what one needs, look no further than the P-150.

What Document Scanner is Light, Small

and Inexpensive?

By +Dax Radder

If you guessed the Brother DS-600 Document Scanner you win; but you won’t get any money or a new car, or free ocean cruise to Alaska, and you won’t get the smallest, fastest, lightest, document scanner. But you will be the annuitant of one thing that’s even more important; the DS-600 is far less expensive than the competition.

We’re talking price here, folks, so if you are a cost-conscious buyer, and on a family budget, and need to scan documents where ever you are, this is your ticket. Oh sure, you might be able to find other portable mobile scanners close to or lower than the price of the DS-600, but they tend to only be used for photos, not documents; besides, those scanners only received three stars.

The Brother DS-600 Document Scanner is not only light, small, (you can hold it in one hand) and inexpensive, it gets power over USB cable, and comes with protective sleeves for scanning your photos safely.

Most people who invest in a document scanner are primarily concerned with two things: cost and performance. Well, we have already touched on the value of the DS-600, but the overall performance is redolent of mobile scanners priced in the $300 price range. Like many electronic products the Brother DS-600 has its limitations for handling multi-page documents, but like most manual-feed scanners, the speed will depend on how fast you can feed the paper. Since the actual scan only takes about 13 seconds, which may be a tad bit slower than that nifty, expensive document scanner, it’s still fast enough to serve the purpose.

Actually, in one accuracy test, the Brother DS-600 Document Scanner scored quite well in the ability to read different font sizes as small as 8 point without a mistake. Can we get an “atta boy!” from anybody?

By this time if you are still wandering in the valley of indecision about choosing a document scanner, with your permission, let’s make a quick list of some reasons why the DS-600 Document Scanner should be sitting on your desk tomorrow afternoon:

It offers exceptional quality scanning your documents without taking up most all of your desk space

It offers some of the best clarity using 600 dpi color resolution

The dynamic software insures easy management of your pictures and documents

The scanning media range can be as small as a business card to 8.5″ x 14″ paper

With the USB 2.0 interface the DS-600 scanner operates at high speed using limited power from the PC

The Brother DS-600 can go where you go – anytime, anyplace you have need for scanning

Operates using low power consumption of 0.2W in standby mode and a maximum of 2.0W when scanning

Brother DSMobile® DS-600 Document Scanner

And if that were not enough plus-signs to get you off the couch, and heading for the nearest store to do your own testing of the Brother DS-600, here is some more ammunition. It has malfunction capability, one touch scanning, no external power adapter required, has a small, compact design, document versatility, it uses a compact image sensor, and it’s practically a maintenance-free operation.

So, let‘s see, have we missed anything? Probably not except to mention that everything you will need to start scanning will be in the box when you make the purchase, including scanning software for Windows. The bottom line is the Brother DS-600 is not just a scanner; it’s a powerful scanning package.

Paper clutter can be one of the most annoying things in the world. Whether someone is working at their office, or at home, or they are a student in high school or college, paper clutter can easily accumulate. Documents, reading materials, essays, papers, and/or homework can all pile up. Before they know it, they will not have enough space to put all their papers.

They might end up with a desk that has papers taking up 50% of the space, leaving them with very little space to actually get any work done. This will not only cause them to be less comfortable, but also less productive.

The easiest solution

The easiest solution is to buy a paper scanner, such as the Fujitsu ScanSnap S1500 Document Scanner for PC’s.

When they get a scanner, they will be able to scan and sort out all your important documents instantly. For example, they could create certain folders in your computer and sort documents by placing them in different folders. They could have one folder for office documents, one for personal documents, one for reading materials, and one for miscellaneous papers. This way, everything will be right there and there will be no clutter around your desk.

Once all the documents that are important are scanned with the Fujitsu ScanSnap S1500 Document Scanner for PC’s, one can store the hard copies somewhere else. They can place them in a cabinet somewhere in their apartment or house, or even store them at the office. Instead of having to go through stacks of paper before finding the right one, one simply has to spend a few seconds on the computer and open up the file in question. These files can be named, labelled, and sorted in a way that makes them extremely easy to find and sort through.

A clean desk

Imagine having a desk that just has a few important things on it. There would be a computer, a mouse pad, a writing notepad and a few pens and pencils. All the clutter of 100-200 papers will be gone. This leaves the desk as free as possible and it will lead to greater comfort and productivity. When one sits in a comfortable environment, it becomes easier to settle in and accomplish the tasks they want to. Having less papers on a desk also gets rid of that claustrophobic feeling that can sometimes come when one has too little space in which to work.

Scanning receipts

Even insignificant things such as receipts can be scanned. For example, many people keep their receipts for when they are going to file their taxes. This results in people having stacks and stacks of receipts somewhere around their room, which only leads to more paper clutter.

Instead of that, one could simply scan a few receipts at a time and save them on a computer or flash drive. The receipts can be organized in dated folders, making it easy to identify when certain expenditures were made.

Make your life easier

At the end of the day, you want to buy things that are going to make your life easier, not more complicated. Technology can get complicated at times, but the Fujitsu ScanSnap S1500 Document Scanner for PC’s is one of the simplest and most useful items you will ever purchase. All your clutter problems will be taken care of. Instead of having papers lying around aimlessly, you will be able to scan, file, organize, and sort through all your documents in a much more efficient manner. Not only will you have no clutter, but you will also end up spending less time going through documents to find the one you want. It is a win-win situation.
